Revealed: Top Two Google Ranking Factors to Help You Make Money Online
(This article is the 25TH Part of a series of articles of the author Veena Furtado’s forthcoming Book/EBook – Veena’s Internet Marketing Strategies. “Veena’s Internet Marketing Strategies” is a worldwide protected publication of © Copyright Veena Furtado and www.veenamakesmoneyonline.com )“To climb steep hills requires slow pace at first.” – William ShakespeareAllow me to reveal to you, what I believe are the two most important ranking factors used by Google to enable you make money online. The top two Google ranking factors are:
1. PageRank 2. Incoming Text Link Keywords Let me explain each in more detail and what you MUST do to maximize the effectiveness of each element.
1. PageRankPageRank is determined by the number and quality of links to a page. Both the quantity and quality of text links are important. Always try to get links from web pages with a PageRank rating of at least four.Concentrate on getting as many different quality sites as possible to link to one page on your site, usually your home page. Do not spread the links to different pages. This will maximize the PageRank of your main page, plus those of the subpages.
2. Incoming Text Link KeywordsALWAYS provide text links for linking to your site. Avoid image links.Google does index image links, but without any text for it to index, it won’t help your link popularity rating for your important keywords.
In addition:a. Include the most important keyword phrase in the text link, using the EXACT spelling. b. Do not pluralize the keyword phrase, if people usually search the singular version of the phrase. And vice versa. c. Avoid excess words, where possible. d. The linked to page MUST have the text link keywords in the body of the page; otherwise Google will discount the page. e. Include the text link keywords within the title tag of the linked to page. It is possible for a page without the text link keywords in the title tag to get top rankings. But I have discovered that around 80% of top 10 rankings have the text link keywords in the title tag, so always include it.
There you go. Those are what I consider the two most important ranking factors used by Google. Other factors are considered by Google, but their importance pales in comparison to the two I have discussed in this article.
Follow these tips whenever you optimize your web pages and they will quickly shoot up the Google rankings.

How Google Ranks Websites
Google is by far the most important search engine on the net. To rise to the top of their search engine, you need to improve your link popularity and you need to understand how they measure your link popularity (over 50% of all search engine traffic comes from Google, and if you can rise to the top, you will likely rise to the top of all the other search engines as well).
Link popularity is defined as the number of sites that are linking to your site. Some websites have thousands or even millions of sites linking to them, while others might have only a few. The search engines use the number of inbound links your site has as a measure of how important your site is, which translates into your search engine ranking.
The actual number of links to your site is not the only variable used to calculate your link popularity. The search engines also examine the relevance of the links to the subject matter of your site. For example, if a website that sells vitamins has 4,000 inbound links, but the source of most of the links are websites that have nothing to do with vitamins, then the algorithm that search engines use to determine link popularity will take that into account, and the link popularity score will not be very good.
It is possible for a website with a relatively small number of quality inbound links to be ranked higher than a site with a bunch of irrelevant or insignificant links. If I have a website that offers quotes for auto insurance, and I have 800 quality inbound links, then I might receive a much higher search engine ranking than another mortgage site that has 3,000 links that stem from link farms or Free For All (FFA) pages.
If you try to acquire inbound by using link farms or FFA pages, not only will it hurt your search engine ranking, but you might get permanently removed from the search engine listings. Links farms are sites where you can instantly exchange links with all the sites listed in that directory. FFA pages are pointless link directories. The search engines usually discount any links that come from either of these sources.
Now that we understand what link popularity is and how it works, we need to look specifically at how Google measures it. They use a number of variables in their algorithm to calculate your overall link score. The higher your score, the higher you will be ranked in the search listings.
One factor that Google uses in their algorithm, obviously, is the total number of sites linking to you. The more links you have, the higher your score will be. However, their algorithm is a little more complicated than that, and it is possible for a website with fewer links to be ranked higher than a website that has more links.
The reason for this is because Google also measures the quality of your links. If your website is about vitamins, and the site linking to you is a video game site, then that is not considered a quality link. The link still helps your score, but the link would help your score much more if it were from a website whose subject matter is the same as yours.
Also, Google gives a higher score to a link if it comes from a page that has actual content that relates to your keywords. For example, if your site is about jewelry, and another jewelry website has posted a link to your site on their links page, that link is not as valuable as a link to your site coming from a blog or a message board where a lot of information about jewelry is being written or discussed.
Also, they give an even higher score to a link if it contains anchor text that matches one of the keywords that describes your site. For example, if I have a site that sells lawnmowers, and a blog about lawnmowers has posted a link to my site, it helps my score even more if the link text (also known as anchor text) is LAWNMOWERS. To learn more about anchor text, go to a search engine and look up ANCHOR TEXT and you will be able to learn about it.
Another factor used by Google to score your link popularity is the diversity of keywords contained on sites linking to you. For example, if you have a site that sells handbags, and all the links to your site are from other sites that contain nothing but the keyword HANDBAGS, Google considers that to be abnormal. To get a higher score, you need to have links coming from sites that contain a variety of keywords related to handbags, such as BUY HANDBAGS, LEATHER HANDBAGS, etc.
It is difficult to increase your link popularity, but now that you understand how your score is calculated, you can devise a plan to improve your score. You might want to consider posting to forums and blogs that contain information that is related to your site, and when you post, include a link to your site.

How Google Ranks Ads for Adwords
An understanding of the way Google Adwords ranks PPC or paid search ads is vital if you wish to establish a profitable paid search strategy. Here is an overview on how Google ranks paid search listings:
Every time your ad is triggered by a key word/phrase, Google calculates the Ad Rank of each paid search listing. Listings with the highest Ad Rank are shown first and listings with the lowest Ad Rank are shown in the lowest positions or even not at all.
Ad Rank is determined by the following equation:
Ad Rank = ‘Maximum Cost Per Click’ x ‘Quality Score’
As you can see, Quality Score plays as important a role as bid price does in determining where your ad ranks. This means a competitor who has a better quality score than yourself can actually rank above you for a lower cost per click (CPC).
It is your goal to achieve the highest possible position for the lowest possible cost. Taking the Ad Rank equation into consideration, it becomes easy to see how a strong Quality Score can result in higher rankings at a lower price. How do you secure these higher listings at lower bid prices? First, you should understand what Quality Score is and how you can increase yours.
Quality Score
Unfortunately, the way in which Google calculates your Quality Score is unknown. However, Google does tell us many of the factors that determine Quality Score;
1 – A keyword’s click through rate (CTR) 2 – The historical performance of that keyword 3 – The relevance of text in your ad 4 – The relevance of the keyword to its ad group 5 – The quality of your landing page 6 – Other, unknown relevancy factors.
Now that you know the fundamentals of how Google Adwords works, the question becomes; how to leverage the competitive PPC (Pay per Click) arena in your favour?
Optimising Your Google Adwords Account
In recent times the competition for broad key terms such as ’shoes’, has sky-rocketed. This has resulted in higher cost per clicks for such terms.
A simple, yet effective technique is to target more specific key words, such as ‘tennis shoes’ or ‘buy platform shoes.’ The competition for these types of phrases is less aggressive, leaving you able to capture a large amount of traffic for a substantially lower cost-per-click.
This is known as targeting the long tail of search. While the key terms that fall into the ‘long tail’ are searched for less often than those broader more generic key terms, there are far more specific keywords than there are broad key terms. That makes it possible to leverage the long tail to receive as much or even more traffic for substantially less money.
On top of the benefits above, concentrating on the long tail key words enables you to target your market more specifically. The result is often an increase in quality score, and a much stronger return on investment (ROI).
Achieving a Better Quality Score
If you have multiple products or services, it is possible to group them separately into categorical groups and make each ad group’s ad text and landing page specific to each product or service.
By creating ad text that better matches a user’s search query, it is possible to significantly increase an ads click-thru-rate. Moreover, by creating tailored landing pages specific to the product or products the user is searching for, it is possible to increase the number of conversions.
The benefits described above all contribute to a better quality score.
Because of this ranking algorithm it is possible for advertisers with a good click through rate to achieve a higher position for a lower CPC than their competition. This is why long tail related ads often appear higher in the Google results than general keywords, despite the fact that those advertisers are paying less per click.
Summary
Optimising a Pay per Click (PPC) account to achieve optimal results can be a very complex process. Firstly you will need to build out enough ads and keywords to target the long tail. This will involve a lot of keyword research. You will need to take into account category and product keywords, localization, common spelling mistakes, call to action keywords and so on.
Second, to make the most of those long tail keywords an advertiser will need to have very specific ad text. When dealing with hundreds of products it is tricky to generate a unique text ad and landing page for each one. Nonetheless, this is essential to maintaining a good CTR. PPC management companies will often have their own in-house tools to achieve this.
Testing ad text variations and testing landing pages are also important steps in achieving the most from your advertising spend. However the most important step is measuring and managing the ROI on each keyword. Since the PPC arena is constantly changing, constant monitoring is essential. The value of every keyword is also constantly changing therefore it is essential that you work on a keyword management strategy to deal with this. Bid management tools can be especially helpful here, as can a third party PPC Management Company.

Get Higher Google Rankings
Want to know what Google is looking for in a Web site and how to ensure that your Web site content is meeting the guidelines of Google? Visit www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html.
You may not be a Webmaster, but if you are writing the content for your Web site, you need this information. Let’s take a look at three of the guidelines:
Clear Hierarchy and Text Links
(1) “Make a site with clear hierarchy and text links. Every page should be reachable from at least one static text link.”
In other words, your site needs to be easy to navigate with one click and easy for visitors to figure out how to get to where they want to go. This is a combination of good writing and design.
When I am writing content for a site I always consider how the navigation is designed. Often times I am presented with a site with poor navigation design: you need two or more clicks to get where you want to go, there is no button to bring you back to the homepage or the navigation choices are confusing.
The best content in the world will not help a poorly designed site, you have to have good content and design.
Information-Rich Site
(2) “Create a useful, information-rich site and write pages that clearly and accurately describe your content. Make pages for users, not for search engines. Don’t deceive your users, or present different content to search engines that you display to users.”
Always keep in mind that it is people that buy your product or service, not search engines. The content you write needs to be interesting and informative. It does you no good to have a high search engine ranking if your visitors immediately leave your site because they lose interest.
You also want to bring visitors to your site who are interested in your specific product or service. You want to filter out people who would not be interested in what you have to offer.
Research has consistently shown that the more targeted your market, the greater the percentage of sales for your business. So, don’t think in terms of bringing in as many people as possible. Think in terms of bringing in the people who might be buyers. That’s how you get the money.
Create informative content that will answer your readers’ questions about your product or service. Emphasize the benefits of what you offer. How do you stand out from the competition? Why should they purchase that widget you are selling?
Useful Search Phrases
(3) “Think about the words users would type to find your pages, and make sure that your site actually includes those words within it.”
Start brainstorming and make a long list of all the phrases someone might use to find your Web site. Don’t think in terms of only single words, use two to four word phrases. Using single words makes the search too broad. For instance, if you wanted to find information on business writing workshops in Orange County, you wouldn’t want to type in writing. You would want to narrow your search by including the more descriptive phrase of business writing workshops. If you wanted to narrow it down even further you would include a geographic location like Orange County.
A good way to test out your keywords is to use the free program http://www.goodkeywords.com/. “Good Keywords makes use of various tools provided by search engines like the Overture Search Suggestion Tool, Search Engines Like Yahoo, Google, Teoma and other services like Alexa.” Type in your keywords and the program will tell you the rankings of how people searched for those keywords. The newly released 2.0 version also has an easy meta tag creation tool. So, you can use the tool to create the keyword meta tags for your site.
If you are coming up with poor results with the keywords you have chosen, it is time to start asking other people what they would use to search for your site. The best person to ask is someone who is your target market. If you are targeting entrepreneurs, then go to a networking meeting of entrepreneurs and start asking questions. Tell them what you do and ask what words they would use to find you on the Web.
Sometimes what you think are the best keywords are actually not effective. Many times I have zero results for the words my clients think someone would use to search for their site. I then start researching the target audience to find the right words.
Follow the Leader
Google is the undisputed leader in Search Engines. The guidelines they’ve written are best practices that we should all be following to have a successful online presence.
Google Rank Cake
6 cups thick content mix 1 jar word of mouth, whipped 2
tablespoons meta tags 1 cup creativity
1) In a bowl, stir content mix with 1 cup creativity. Stir. If
hard, let sit overnight
2) Stir in meta tags.
3) Heat server to 100 degrees. In a 1024×768 pan or two 800×600
pans, pour mix. Beat in meta tags.
4) Let bake for one year.
5) While baking, prepare word of mouth.
6) Pagerank and Linkback will start to form on cake. Spread with
a spoon of new content batter every 1-3 weeks.
7) Bake until done.
FAQS/Comments
Q. Should I buy content batter from the box or attempt to make
it myself? A. Content batter usually tastes best homemade.
Although some people might want to get it over with and buy the
mix from a box, it’s all according to your taste. I, personally,
believe homemade is more rich and adds your own personal touch.
Q. What if I’m out of creativity? A. There are many, many people
making these cakes and I’m sure they won’t mind if you took a
taste for inspiration. Sometimes the batter just needs a little
beating.
Q. I have baked for a year and pagerank nor linkback will grow!
A. Is the server set to the right temperature? Did you check it
frequently? Several factors can contribute to lack of pagerank
and linkback growth. Make sure you didn’t do anything to make
your cake stale.
Q. What brand of meta tags do you recommend? A. Honestly, it
doesn’t matter. The generic ones are just as good as the
expensive ones. So I wouldn’t worry too much about spending tons
of money on them. Actually, the best way is to make them
yourself.
Q. I heard word of mouth was hard to come by. So how am I
supposed to get 1 jar! A. Easy. Give ‘em something to talk
about. You’ll have the whole jar in no time.
Q. I do not have the patience to wait a whole year for Google
Rank Cake! I have money and I will buy the biggest one there is!
A. Good luck and see you at the unemployment line. Google Rank
Cake cannot be bought. Ever! While it’s true you can purchase
the ____________ which appears next to the Google Rank Cake,
however you can never purchase the cake itself.
Q. Is it okay to let my Google Rank Cake bake longer than a
year? A. Yes. In fact, the more you let it bake, the richer it
will get. Just as long as you remember to spoon on fresh content
batter every so often to prevent dryness.
Q. My friend’s cake is the biggest I’ve seen and mine is the
second biggest. But I’ve used more content batter and meta tags
than him! A. Boy, I remember the day when having a cake that was
one layer too small was something to truly fuse about. You’ll
have your day too, just remember to keep adding content batter
and creativity.
I’d love to hear how your Google Cake Rank turned out! And
remember, it’s not the size of the server that matters, but the
person behind it!

Google Ranking Keeps Website Owners on their Toes
Google for the longest time maintains the standards which website owners need to maintain in order to achieve maximum exposure though the search engines.
I have often wondered how a website could be number one on MSN search but could not be found on Google search.
I have asked myself the following questions in relationship to where my website stands:
1) Is it due to content rich pages?
2) Is it due to the number of one way links to the website?
3) Is my website not showing up because I pay for Google Adwords?
4) Has my website been sandboxed due to exchange links?
5) Is my subject content unacceptable to Google?
6) How come my website isn’t showing up and it’s a Google Ranked four where other websites are showing up on page one and two of the search engine results and these websites are ranked a three?
The questions go on and on with no resolution. I have tested the system by creating two new sites. Both are based on the same content but presented differently. The websites were created; the subject matter was the same. The first website was given a Google ranking of three the other was given a two. This only confused me some more. How a three page website could be given a three where the other website had twelve pages and was give a two. I compared the links to the sites and every aspect. I could not find a reasonable solution. The number of hits to the website was similar. They both had minimal.
I decided to create another site. Once again I use similar subject matter and combined techniques from the previous two sites and added related subject matter links one way. This site was also given a Google ranking of three. Once again I could find no real justification. Three months later it went to a four where the other two sites stayed the same.
It’s my belief that by October this year my site will be increased to a five. I found new ways to get my sites ranked higher. Since October is right around the corner I should know the results shortly.
I believe the way for my sites to increase is to submit articles on my subject matter to informational sites. These sites are highly favored by the ranking system. These websites not lonely help to increase your ranking, but they also offer more exposure by ranking higher on the search results.
Taking the time to understand your websites complexity and over all relationship to similar sites will help to ensure a proper ranking among the search engines.
The Myth of Google Ranking Dip
Quite recently, there was mayhem when top ranking websites suddenly lost their rankings, resulting in a considerable dip in traffic. To sum it up, Google SERPS began to display unacceptable websites with broken links, spammy content, and you name it. It’s nothing like what we can accept from Google. Google couldn’t have chosen a better time to bring a bug into their system. Together with the economic meltdown, it was serious concern for webmasters. Well, they admitted that it was a bug in their algorithm that went away unnoticed and causing this huge shift in rankings. However, it’s all sorted now, and things are back to normal. But what is the whole point of this exercise? Some claim that Google have been testing some interesting algorithm updates, and would like to keep them under the wraps. Whatever the truth is, we need to know that there is an interesting concept around this whole exercise. Not all websites did lose rankings. If we take a close look, only the ones that were SE optimized did face penalties. Yes, I would like to call this a temporary penalty; however the reach was by far very immense and extreme that the Engineers at Google had to come up with a Plan B! With PubCon conference just a few days down the road, Google will try to get as much feedback as possible. Now, if anyone asks me “How do I stay away from these penalties?” or “How do I make my website an authentic website?” I wouldn’t honestly have any answer. These are easy questions one could ask, but the answer can be quite complex. Take the case of a government auction website that falls under ecommerce category. Can you make a similar one under a private corporation and still receive enough Google juice to be competing with the parent website? Hmmm… Pretty tough question, right? There is one important aspect that everyone can follow, that will provide them with some success. Have you ever thought that quality traffic and conversions never come for free? What if there were legitimate Search Engine traffic from Google and Yahoo (not by web marketing), if you could pay for it? Yes, it will be pretty awesome, right? The best part is, since you pay for this traffic, you will not be subjected to organic ranking shifts and you can keep getting traffic and customers, even if your website traffic reduces radically from the organic listings. For me, this is the way to move forward. At least, it will help me pay my bills!
